A remarkable original 1866 volume of Transactions of the Medical Society of the State of New York, published in Albany by C. Wendell, Printer. Bound in its original deep brown cloth with blind-tooled panels, a gilt-lettered spine, and an elegant period monogram to the front board, this substantial medical volume preserves a fascinating record of nineteenth-century American medicine in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War.

Its many articles address embalming, ophthalmic surgery, obstetrical cases, congenital abnormalities, surgery for gunshot wounds, disease, anatomy, and medical practice. The volume is especially compelling for its numerous finely printed illustrations/plates, including anatomical diagrams, surgical studies, portraits and case images, and striking plates of congenital conditions and comparative anatomy. An unusual and visually rich addition for collectors of medical history, Victorian science, anatomy, or Civil War-era ephemera.

The binding is tight. Wear/rubbing is present at the spine ends and corners; the gilt spine lettering remains attractive. Pages are generally clean with occasional foxing and age toning.
