A beautifully preserved late-Victorian edition of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott Published by Frederick Warne & Co., London. Issued in richly decorated original cloth and complimented by an institutional prize inscription dated 1898. This volume exemplifies the high standard of literary gift books produced by Frederick Warne at the close of the 19th century.
Bound in original brown cloth with beveled board edges, the cover features an elegant gilt floral frame with maroon floral accents, gilt titling, and blind-stamped decoration to the rear board. The spine is gilt with matching floral ornamentation. All page edges are gilt.
The text includes a portrait frontispiece of Scott and numerous full-page wood-engraved illustrations throughout, along with red-ruled page borders. Contents include Scott’s major narrative poems such as Marmion, The Lady of the Lake, and The Lord of the Isles, among others.
Holding provenance is the original prize presentation label to the front pastedown, awarded by the Bradford Mechanics’ Institute to John Mitchell for proficiency in German (Intermediate), dated October 11, 1898, signed by the Institute’s president.
