Publisher: Frederick Warne & Co., London
Editor: John S. Roberts
Date: c.1892 (Prize inscription dated 1892)

An exceptional Victorian fine binding of The Legendary Ballads of England and Scotland, edited by John S. Roberts, presented here in an elegant late 19th-century full gilt-decorated prize binding of remarkable quality.

Bound in rich crimson polished calf with gilt decoration to the spine and boards while the upper board is stamped in gilt with the school’s insignia. Also enhanced by delicate gilt dentelle turn-ins, marbled endpapers, and gilt to all page edges. The binding remains exceptionally bright and crisp.

Awarded as an English Literature Prize from Sir Roger Cholmeley’s School, Highgate in 1892, the volume retains its original prize bookplate, adding a wonderful layer of provenance and historical interest.

Containing 628 pages, the book presents a substantial collection of the great traditional English and Scottish ballads, including tales of Robin Hood, Sir Patrick Spens, Chevy Chase, Thomas of Ercildoune, The Twa Corbies, King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, and many others. Numerous full-page illustrations throughout enrich the text, making this an impressive literary and decorative volume.

A striking example of Victorian bookbinding that is equally at home in a serious collection or displayed as a statement piece in a library.
