This 1899 “New Impression” edition is bound in a full leather prize binding from Ramsgate Centre, Oxford Local Examination, featuring gilt floral tooling, raised bands, marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges.
Numerous engraved illustrations by Margery May and G. Pearson. Wood’s affectionate and observant writing helped popularize natural history for Victorian readers, blending storytelling with reflections on animal behavior and companionship.
Binding tight. Some light foxing to prelims. 310pp. The Oxford prize presentation dated 1900 further adds to the book’s period character and provenance.
