Voyage en Sicile et à Malte by P. Brydone | 1860 French Cartonnage Book

A beautifully preserved mid-nineteenth-century French travel book, Voyage en Sicile et à Malte by P. Brydone, translated by Campe and expanded from more recent travel accounts. This sixth edition was published in Tours by Ad. Mame et Cie in 1860.

This striking volume is bound in its original ornate white, green, and gilt cartonnage binding, with a finely colored scenic panel to the front board. The reverse carries an equally elaborate floral and architectural gilt design. Decorative patterned papers visible along the inner edges of both boards, an unusual detail that enhances the book’s visual appeal. The volume includes engraved scenic illustrations, including the Cathedral of Palermo and the Grotto of Saint Rosalia.

This is a quintessential example of French decorative publishing in the mid-19th century — combining literary charm with elaborate gilt artistry and a hand-painted vignette. Such bindings were often produced as treasured gift books, making them highly sought after by collectors of cartonnage and fine French literature.

The binding remains tight. Please review the photographs closely for additional condition detail.

Size: 4 1/2” x 7 1/4”

A particularly decorative example of nineteenth-century French cartonnage, ideal for a collector of travel books, Italy and Malta, or exceptional period bindings.
