Published in 1919 by Doubleday, Page & Company, this is a first edition of Christopher Morley’s beloved novel The Haunted Bookshop—a favorite bookish mystery dedicated “To the Booksellers.”

Set in Brooklyn shortly after the First World War, the story returns to Roger Mifflin, the eccentric and deeply philosophical bookseller first introduced in Parnassus on Wheels. When a young advertising man visits Mifflin’s shop, he becomes intrigued by both the bookseller’s new assistant, Titania Chapman, and the strange disappearance and reappearance of a particular volume. A tale of romance, espionage, and intrigue. Mifflin explains that his shop is “haunted by the ghosts of great literature”—the voices and ideas found within its books. The novel isregarded as an example of the bibliomystery, making it especially appealing to booksellers, collectors, and readers who love stories set among books.

This is a previous library copy from the Herrick Memorial Library. Library markings include a withdrawn stamp and notations to the preliminary pages, an embossed library stamp to the title and copyright leaves and library stamps to the top and fore edges of the text block. A former owner’s inscription dated April 1920 appears on the front free endpaper.

The cloth shows some rubbing spine edges and light bumping to corners. Binding tight. No dust jacket is present.
