Bound in rich red full leather with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine and boards, marbled page edges, and marbled endpapers. Dentelle detail to boards. The front board features the gilt crest of the Merchant Taylors’ School for Girls, Great Crosby. Inside is a charming 19th-century prize bookplate, handwritten to Florence Preston for “2nd Prize for Mathematics, June 1890.”

Originally published in 1837, Carlyle’s masterwork is a vivid, dramatic narrative of the French Revolution, praised for its rich language and intense historical insight. This 1889 reprint from stereotype plates by Chapman & Hall retains all three volumes in full, complete with detailed contents and chapter headings.
