1847 Les Petits Solitaires de la Vallée d’Aoste | Victor Doublet | Rare French Pictorial Cartonnage
A striking decorative mid-19th-century French volume cartonnage romantique, Les Petits Solitaires de la Vallée d’Aoste by Victor Doublet, published in Paris by Victor Doublet, Éditeur, in 1847.
Issued as part of L’École des Vertus du Jeune Âge, Nouvelle Bibliothèque Morale, the work belongs to the French tradition of moral and educational literature for young readers.
Deep midnight blue boards elaborately ornamented in gilt and silver-toned relief with scrolling Rococo-inspired foliage, flowers, architectural forms, and ornamental borders. At the center of the upper board is an oval hand-colored pictorial scene showing a young woman and seated gentleman, framed by exceptionally elaborate gilt decoration. The rear board is similarly lavish, centered with an ornate gilt arabesque design. The richly decorated spine continues the gilt ornamentation, and the text block is finished with all edges gilt.
An engraved frontispiece accompanies the title page, with additional decorative and illustrated elements appearing within the volume. The combination of pictorial decoration, elaborate raised ornament, contrasting metallic details, and brilliant gilt edges makes this an especially beautiful surviving example of French Romantic-era publisher’s cartonnage.
Published in Paris in 1847 by Victor Doublet, with Victor Doublet also listed as author-publisher in Dijon. Text in French.
The binding remains remarkably decorative for its age, retaining strong gilt and much of its original surface detail. There is light age-related rubbing and wear, particularly to the spine ends, corners, and board edges.
A rare and highly decorative example of 1840s French juvenile literature and 19th-century decorative bookbinding.
