1840 Flora’s Interpreter by Sarah Josepha Hale | Hand-Colored Botanical Gift Book | Language of Flowers

A scarce and early American edition of Flora’s Interpreter; or, The American Book of Flowers and Sentiments by Sarah Josepha Hale, published in Boston by Marsh, Capen, Lyon, and Webb in 1840 (ninth edition, improved).

This lovely volume belongs to the long tradition of “language of flowers” books—popular in the 19th century—where blooms held symbolic meanings used to convey emotion, affection, and unspoken sentiments. Hale’s work is particularly notable for adapting this European tradition into an American literary context, drawing upon poetry, botany, and cultural symbolism.

A particularly special feature of this copy is the presence of hand-painted floral illustrations. The text offers botanical classifications, poetic excerpts, and symbolic interpretations, alongside practical notes on flowers—bridging science, sentiment, and literature which was very appealing to 19th-century readers.

Original boards present with expected wear and age toning. Front board and back board decorative detail mirror each other. Spine cracked with splitting along the joints though binding intact(note photo)*. Wear to spine and edges. With foxing; heavier in some places. Pages remain readable. Hand-painted illustrations present. Overall a well-worn but charming and complete copy.

Condition: Fair to Good condition.

Early American flower dictionaries are becoming more difficult to source, especially copies in original boards with period handwork, making examples, such as this, especially appealing to collectors.

Size: 4 3/4” x 7 1/2”

A timeworn yet enchanting volume - marked with the language of flowers and artistry of the past.
