A striking mid-19th century French cartonnage romantique prize binding, beautifully presented in deep midnight blue cloth with a central gilt wreath design on the front board and a detailed gilt ship motif on the back board. The elaborately gilt-tooled spine features scrolling floral and geometric designs framing the gilt title.
Near fine binding tight. Clean pages. A few with some faint foxing. The book retains its original prize inscription label from Institution Rossat, Charleville (Ardennes), dated 12 August 1857.
Published in Tours by Mame et Cie in 1856, this is the troisième édition of Simon le Polletais, an evocative maritime tale by H. de Chavannes de la Giraudière, offering vivid sketches of seafaring life.
