Les Jeunes Ouvrieres, ou L’Epreuve et la Recompense by Mme Woillez | 1852

A beautifully preserved mid-19th century French moral and instructive novel, Les Jeunes Ouvrières (“The Young Workers”), written by Mme Woillez, author of Robinson des Demoiselles and other works of educational and moral fiction. Published in Tours by the renowned house of A. Mame et Cie, this 1852 fourth edition features a finely decorated publisher’s cloth binding in black with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, a central gilt vignette of a flower-girl on the front board, and a gilt ornamental device on the back board.

Engraved plates protected by tissue guards. Very light rubbing to corners. Binding tight and sound. Scattered foxing. This copy bears a charming 19th-century prize inscription dated August 30, 1861, awarded for religious instruction—adding a layer of historical and sentimental provenance.

A beautiful example of 19th-century French decorative publisher’s cloth, offering both aesthetic appeal and cultural insight into the moral literature of the era.
