Les Émigrants – Gustave Nieritz | Illustrated | c.1840s-1850s | Gilt Architectural Motif and Gilt Urn to Boards

An exquisite example of mid-19th century cartonnage romantique, Les Émigrants by Gustave Nieritz is a beautifully illustrated French edition intended for young readers and their friends. Published in Paris by Belin-Leprieur et Morizot, this edition features two-tone illustrations by Derancourt, finely printed by Lemercier in Paris. The narrative follows a group of emigrants on their voyage and settlement, blending moral instruction with vivid storytelling, a hallmark of Nieritz’s works.

The striking black cloth binding is lavishly adorned with ornate gilt decoration on the front and back boards, as well as an elaborate gilt spine. The front cover’s architectural motif frames the title in grand style, while the back features an intricate floral urn design. The pages are gilt-edged on all sides. Illustrated with full-page plates. Binding tight and sound. Clean pages.
