An elegant mid-19th century French work on the history and ideals of knighthood, Histoire de la Chevalerie (“History of Chivalry”) by J.-J.-E. Roy is a richly illustrated account of the origins, customs, and legendary figures of medieval knighthood. Published by the esteemed A. Mame et Cie of Tours, this 1853 seventh edition is beautifully bound in its original deep plum cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped motifs of arms and armor to the front and back boards, and an ornate gilt spine with heraldic and floral decoration.
A volume which brings to life the romanticized ideals of bravery, loyalty, and honor that characterized the medieval knightly code.
Light fading of plum cloth. Illustrated. Binding tight and sound. Very light rubbing to corners/ edges. Twentieth-century ink inscription on front endpaper, dated 1920, awarding the book as a “Prix d’encouragement” (Encouragement Prize).
