Bound in original indigo blue cloth with an elaborate gilt pictorial cover and ornate gilt spine, this Romantic-period binding remains tight and sound. The publisher’s name, “Dubochet,” is stamped in gilt at the base of the spine—an identifying mark of Dubochet et Cie editions produced in Paris during the 1840s. Known for their high-quality illustrated works, Dubochet collaborated with Grandville at the height of his career, producing some of the most imaginative and sought-after illustrated books of the century.
This edition features numerous full-page and in-text engravings, blending Florian’s classic fables with Grandville’s whimsical, anthropomorphic artistry.
