A beautiful mid-19th century French cartonnage romantique prize binding, richly decorated black cloth with an ornate gilt and hand-colored floral bouquet centerpiece framed by an embossed ornamental border. The spine is lavishly gilt-tooled with intricate floral and scrollwork designs, the back board mirroring the front in full decorative detail.

Published in Limoges and Paris in 1852 by Librairie des Bons Livres (Chez Martial Ardant Frères), this volume, Choix de Beaux Exemples de Dévouement Religieux, Civil, Militaire, by Abbé Laurent, presents moral and inspirational tales of devotion in religious, civic, and military life.

The book retains its original school prize label from Ville de Chartres – Enseignement Mutuel, awarded to a pupil for excellence in music on August 31, 1853.

Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece of Clovis Ier protected by tissue guard. Yellow endpapers complete the vibrant period presentation.
