Title translation: The Young Martyrs of the Christina Faith

A cartonnage romantique from mid-19th-century France, this 1847 devotional volume, Les Jeunes Martyrs de la Foi Chrétienne, offers both reverent content and beautiful design. Bound by A. Mame et Cie in Tours, the book’s gilt-stamped boards are covered in brilliant cobalt blue with an intricate floral centerpiece framed by ornate baroque borders and stylized cornerwork.

This “Troisième Édition,” approved by ecclesiastical authority, was produced for use in Christian schools. It recounts the moving lives and deaths of young Christian martyrs, inspiring both religious reflection and moral instruction. The illustrations—engraved frontispiece and plates protected by tissue guards—capture key episodes in the lives of saints like Sainte Perpétue.

Binding remains bold and striking with minor wear to edges and spine tips. Some light foxing typical for age. Structurally sound with original tissue guards present. Bookseller’s label to front endpaper.

Condition: Very Good

Size: 4 1/4” x 7 1/4”

This is a luminous devotional book that beautifully bridges artistic craftsmanship and spiritual narrative—ideal for collectors of fine bindings or ecclesiastical history.
