The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving | Illustrated by Arthur Rackham | 1928 First Edition

In 1928, Arthur Rackham gave new life to Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow —this rare first American edition and in this condition, published by David McKay Company, captures the magic and mystery of one of America’s greatest ghost stories.

The first American edition was issued after the UK George G. Harrap edition of the same year.

Rackham’s illustrations hauntingly capture this gothic tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman.

Black cloth binding with illustrated paste-down to front board. Decorative endpapers. Frontispiece with captioned tissue guard. Binding tight. 8 full-page colored vibrant  illustrations along with numerous black & white illustrations. Binding tight. Clean pages. 102pp.

Condition: Near Fine

Size: 7 1/2” x 10”

This is both a collector’s treasure and a storybook classic — a beautiful example of Rackham’s artistry paired with one of the most iconic pieces of American gothic literature.
