At The Sign of the Reine Pedauque is a novel written by Anatole France, first published in 1892. Set in France during the 18th century, the story follows the adventures of a young law student named Gerard de Nerval, who becomes embroiled in a series of mysterious and dangerous events after he is invited to stay at the inn of the Reine Pedauque. Through his encounters with a cast of colorful characters, including a freethinking scholar, a cunning thief, and a beautiful and enigmatic young woman, Gerard is forced to confront the corrupt and hypocritical society in which he lives, and to question his own beliefs and values. The novel is widely regarded as a masterpiece of French literature, and has been praised for its wit, satire, and incisive commentary on the social and political issues of its time.
