Anecdotes Chrétiennes (Christian Anecdotes) by L’Abbé Reyre, c.1860 — Teal French Cartonnage Binding
A lovely mid-19th-century French devotional work, Anecdotes Chrétiennes (“Christian Anecdotes”) by Abbé Reyre, published by F. Ardant Frères in Limoges and Paris.
Bound in a striking teal cartonnage romantique binding, the cover features a hand-colored central vignette depicting a Dutch windmill scene, surrounded by elaborate gilt tooling and textured boards. The spine is gilt-lettered and decorated in the same ornate Romantic style.
The volume opens with an engraved frontispiece of Fénelon and contains a series of moral and religious reflections and stories.
A charming piece of provenance is found within — a 19th-century school certificate from the Pensionnat de la Ferté-Macé with the name Maria Leboucher written in elegant period ink, lending this example a personal connection to its early owner and the educational institutions of provincial France.
Light wear consistent with age; binding tight and gilt bright.
Condition: Very Good
Size: 5” x 8”
A refined and well-preserved example of mid-century French religious publishing — and a fine addition to any collection of cartonnage bindings or devotional literature.
