1900 Shakespeare’s Heroines Mrs. Jameson | Henry Altemus Edition | Illustrated | Pocket Size

A beautifully produced 1900 edition of Shakespeare’s Heroines by Mrs. Jameson, published by Henry Altemus of Philadelphia; an elegant and highly collectible example of turn-of-the-century decorative cloth binding.

Bound in sage green cloth, the cover is richly adorned with a floral motif in gilt and polychrome, complemented by a similarly decorated spine. The design reflects the aesthetics of the late 19th-century gift book tradition, where literature and ornament were equally considered.

The volume opens with a colored frontispiece of Ophelia, followed by additional illustrated plates throughout of Cleopatra, Cordelia, and Miranda. Jameson’s text offers reflections on Shakespeare’s female figures, blending literary criticism with historical and moral insight.

Binding tight and sound. Some rubbing and light wear to the gilt and coloring along the spine, with gentle rubbing to extremities. Interior remains clean with light with some age toning. Illustrated, including a colored frontispiece.

Condition: Very Good.

Size: 4 1/2” x 6 1/2”

Pocket-sized and finely made, this is a volume intended not only for reading but for display.
