The Poetical Works of Jean Ingelow (1884) | Illustrated

Jean Ingelow (1820–1897) was a celebrated English poet and novelist whose work enjoyed remarkable popularity in the Victorian era. Best known for her lyrical and sentimental verse, including Songs of Seven and High Tide on the Coast of Lincolnshire, Ingelow’s poetry blended emotional depth with vivid natural imagery, earning praise from contemporaries such as Tennyson and Longfellow. Her writings were widely read on both sides of the Atlantic, making her one of the most beloved female poets of her generation.

This 1884 richly decorated Victorian volume of poetry by Jean Ingelow is a visual and literary delight. Publisher: Belford, Clarke & Co., Chicago and New York. Bound in elaborately stamped red cloth with botanical motifs in deep green and maroon, highlighted by gilt accents, this edition is a fine example of 19th-century decorative publishers’ bindings.

The front cover and spine feature vivid chromolithographic floral elements with Ingelow’s name in ornate gilt lettering. All page edges gilt, delicate patterned endpapers and full-page black-and-white engravings accompany her poetic works, including The Shepherd Lady and The Dreams That Came True.

Light wear to extremities and spine ends. Binding tight. Bright gilt. Interior clean with minimal toning.

Condition: Very Good

Size: 5” x 7 1/2”

A wonderful piece for collectors of illustrated poetry, women authors, or Victorian design.
