Down the Garden Path - Beverley Nichols | 1933 | Jonathan Cape Publisher, London

Down the Garden Path by Beverley Nichols is one of the most celebrated garden memoirs of the early twentieth century. First published in 1932, this copy is the 15th impression, issued in 1933 by Jonathan Cape, London.

Nichols recounts the purchase of a country cottage and the process of creating his ideal garden. From rock gardens to greenhouses, woodland walks, and the quiet domestic joys of cats and country life, the book has become one of the most quoted and best-loved gardening classics of all time.

In its original publisher’s green cloth binding. Stamped in gilt with a formal garden design to the front board. Spine is gilt-titled and features a decorative torch motif with a colorful mosaic-style base. Gilt to top edges.  Color map endpapers. Flora frontispiece.  Illustrated title page with four full-page illustrations and additional black-and-white illustrations throughout. Illustrations by Rex Whistler. Binding tight. Some minor scattered light foxing. 290pp.

A newspaper obituary for Nichols is laid in back, adding a piece of literary ephemera and a poignant historical connection to the author.
