Rev. J. G. Wood (1827–1889) was a popular Victorian naturalist known for making the study of animals. Wood’s work, Garden Friends and Foes, serves as a practical and engaging guide to the creatures encountered in gardens and cultivated spaces. Divided into “friends” and “foes,” it enables the reader to distinguish between species that support plant life and those that threaten it. Covering mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and more, the text blends observation with usable insight—reflecting both Victorian natural history and hands-on horticultural knowledge.
The volume is illustrated throughout with approximately 200 detailed engravings, depicting animals and insects in various stages of life, and is further enhanced by eight full-page plates at the rear. These illustrations add both visual interest and scientific clarity, making the work as engaging as it is informative.
