Histoire de Charles VIII, Roi de France — M. Todiére — 1853 French Prize Binding

A beautiful mid-nineteenth-century French historical work, Histoire de Charles VIII, Roi de France, by M. Todiére. This fifth edition was published by Alfred Mame et Cie., Tours, in 1853. The text recounts the life and reign of Charles VIII of France, including his Italian campaigns, and is illustrated throughout with detailed engraved plates of courtly and historical scenes.

A striking gilt and color-embossed cartonnage binding, with a portrait of the young king set within an elaborate floral and scrolling design. The reverse is equally handsome, with a large central floral ornament. A lovely 1863 school-prize presentation leaf from the École Primaire annexed to the École Normale de Poitiers is present at the front, offering a wonderful layer of period provenance.

Binding is tight. The gilt and hand-colored decorative elements remain exceptionally attractive. Pages show light, scattered foxing and age toning. Illustrated plates are well-preserved. School prize presentation leaf is present along with inscription.

This is a quintessential example of French decorative publishing in the mid-19th century — combining literary charm with elaborate gilt artistry and a hand-painted vignette. Such bindings were often produced as treasured gift books, making them highly sought after by collectors of cartonnage and fine French literature.

Size: 4 1/2” x 7 1/4”

A richly decorative and highly collectible example of French cartonnage, combining royal history, original illustrations, and authentic nineteenth-century school-prize provenance.
