Eliza Cook (1818–1889) was an English poet and journalist known for her advocacy of working-class education and women’s rights. Largely self-taught, she gained popularity for her sentimental and patriotic verse, often championing social causes. Her best-known poem, The Old Armchair, became widely beloved. She also founded Eliza Cook’s Journal (1849–1854), a publication that promoted progressive ideas, including the importance of education for all. Cook remains an important figure in Victorian poetry, celebrated for her accessible and heartfelt writing.
