Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861) was one of the most celebrated poets of the Victorian era, known for her deeply personal and socially conscious poetry. Born in England, she gained early literary recognition and later defied societal norms by secretly marrying fellow poet Robert Browning in 1846. The couple settled in Italy, where she wrote some of her most famous works, including Sonnets from the Portuguese, a collection of love poems inspired by her relationship with Robert. Her epic poem Aurora Leigh and her abolitionist writings also showcased her commitment to social justice. Browning’s lyrical and emotive poetry, filled with themes of love, faith, and political activism, continues to be admired today.
