Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist and poet best known for Jane Eyre (1847), a groundbreaking novel that blended Gothic romance with social criticism and psychological depth. Writing under the pseudonym Currer Bell, she defied 19th-century gender norms with her strong-willed, independent heroines. Her first novel, The Professor, was initially rejected by publishers and published posthumously in 1857, though it laid the groundwork for Villette (1853), one of her most mature works. In addition to her novels, Brontë collaborated with her sisters, Emily and Anne, on Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell (1846), a poetry collection that gained little recognition at the time but marked their literary debut. Despite her success, Brontë’s life was marked by personal loss, and she died at 38, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important writers of the Victorian era.
