John Milton (1608–1674) was an English poet, scholar, and civil servant best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost, a masterpiece of blank verse that explores themes of free will, divine justice, and the fall of man. A staunch supporter of the Puritan cause, Milton wrote extensively on political and religious issues, including Areopagitica, a powerful defense of free speech and the press. His later works, Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes, reflect his deep engagement with theology and personal struggles, particularly after he became blind in his forties. Milton’s complex and eloquent poetry, along with his revolutionary ideas on liberty and governance, cemented his place as one of the greatest writers in the English literary tradition.
