Spiderland by R.A. Ellis (1912) | First Edition | Illustrated Natural History of Spiders | Cassell

An increasingly scarce first edition of Spiderland (1912) by R. A. Ellis, published by Cassell & Company. This beautifully produced Edwardian natural history work offers an illustrated exploration of spider life, written and illustrated by the author himself.

Bound in the original navy blue cloth with gilt titles and a spider motif to the upper cover and spine, this volume is very visual on the shelf. Inside, Ellis combines scientific observation along with guiding the reader through the structure, habits, architecture, and instincts of spiders. Includes 80 photographic and drawn illustrations, a color frontispiece and full-page plates of webs, cocoons, anatomy, and behavior. Binding tight. Scattered moderate foxing. 108pp.

Size: 5 1/4”x 7 3/4”

Chapters range from orb-weaving to maternal instincts, hunting strategies, and defense mechanisms. One for collectors of zoology, entomology, and illustrated science, as well as admirers of decorative cloth bindings.
