John Buchan’s The Marquis of Montrose is a first edition, published in London by Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1913. This illustrated biography of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, includes portrait plates, maps, and campaign plans.
This illustrated biography recounts the life of James Graham, the 1st Marquess of Montrose, a Scottish nobleman and Royalist commander whose military campaigns unfolded during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
This is an especially appealing association copy, presented to Vivian L. Henderson and bearing his bookplate and a gilt inscription dated 3 June 1927. The book was rebound in full dark green leather by Riviere & Son in 1927, with gilt page edges, tartan cloth endpapers, and a gilt crown and “God Save the King” lettering on the front board. The volume also includes a tipped-in handwritten letter and signed material by author, John Buchan along with with a Signed Letter by Field Marshall Douglas Haig tipped in (St.
Andrews Memorial/Elections).
Field Marshal Douglas Haig (1861–1928), 1st Earl Haig, was a senior British Army officer who commanded the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from late 1915 until the end of World War I. His tipped-in notation adds a notable historical association to the book.
The book is in very good condition, with some light sunning to the leather binding. A handsome, richly documented copy combining Buchan’s history with a personal connection to its author and owner. 333pp.
Size: ~6.4” x 8”
A distinctive copy for collectors of John Buchan, Scottish history, and fine leather bindings.
