Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History | Thomas Carlyle | 1897 Fine Prize Binding | Gilt School Crest | Marbled Endpapers | Chapman & Hall

A handsome late Victorian fine prize binding of Thomas Carlyle’s enduring work, Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History, published by Chapman & Hall in 1897.

Elegantly bound in richly mottled brown calf over boards with an elaborately gilt-decorated spine, this distinguished volume features a gilt armorial school crest to the upper board, decorative gilt borders, marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges. The binding displays the refined craftsmanship associated with high-quality English prize bindings of the period.

The volume retains its original King’s Lynn High School Prize presentation bookplate, awarded on May 25, 1903, providing appealing provenance and a tangible connection to its early history.

Originally delivered as a celebrated lecture series in 1840, Carlyle’s influential work explores the role of extraordinary individuals in shaping civilization. Through six lectures, he examines the hero as divinity, prophet, poet, priest, man of letters, and king, discussing figures including Odin, Mahomet, Dante, Shakespeare, Luther, Knox, Rousseau, Cromwell, Napoleon, and others. The volume is illustrated with engraved portrait plates, including Shakespeare, Rousseau, and Napoleon.

An attractive Victorian fine binding that appeals equally to collectors of decorative bindings, philosophy, literary history, and school prize books.

Condition: Very Good. Binding tight. Light rubbing and wear consistent with age. Interior is clean and bright. Engraved portrait frontispiece and additional portrait plates present.

Size: 5 3/4” x 8”
