Le Moulin de l’Aveugle, ou Les Miracles de la Cécité | 1862 French Cartonnage Book

Le Moulin de l’Aveugle, ou Les Miracles de la Cécité by Just Girard was published in Tours by Ad. Mame et Cie in 1862. This small French volume is presented in its original turquoise-blue decorative cartonnage binding and includes an engraved frontispiece by G. Pann, along with attractive decorative typography throughout.

The story opens in Paris during the severe winter of January 1861 and follows a narrative shaped by compassion, faith, and moral instruction. Just Girard’s work was published for a young French Catholic readership by Mame, one of the foremost nineteenth-century French publishers of illustrated and devotional literature.

This is a quintessential example of French decorative publishing in the mid-19th century — combining literary charm with elaborate gilt artistry and a hand-painted vignette. Such bindings were often produced as treasured gift books, making them highly sought after by collectors of cartonnage and fine French literature.

The binding remains tight. Pages are clean and well preserved, with light scattered age toning and a few minor spots, primarily near the front. The engraved frontispiece is crisp and attractive. Note photos for more details.

Size: 3 3/4” x 6”

A lovely and scarce small French cartonnage volume for collectors of nineteenth-century French literature and decorative bindings.
