The White Shield by Myrtle Reed, First Edition, 1912 — Margaret Armstrong Binding

A collection of short stories by Myrtle Reed, The White Shield was published posthumously by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 1912. The White Shield is a collection of short stories and sketches about love, family life, and human kindness, with episodes ranging from romantic encounters to music-filled and domestic scenes.

This first Putnam edition includes illustrations by Dalton Stevens, including a color frontispiece with captioned tissue guard, as well as red-printed story headings. The lavender ribbed cloth binding is designed by Margaret Armstrong, with her “MA” monogram on the cover and a floral Art Nouveau design stamped in gilt, cream, and burgundy. The volume contains 343 pages and five leaves of illustrations.

The book is in very good+ condition, with a tight binding and gilt top edge. The side and bottom edges are rough cut. There is light age toning and spotting, most noticeable on the endpapers and prelims. A silk page marker is laid in at the title page. The slipcase is included and is in fair condition.

Size: ~8 1/4″ x 5 1/2”.

A beautiful Margaret Armstrong binding.
