The Noble Science by F. P. Delmé Radcliffe (1839) — Fine Green Leather with Hidden Fore-Edge Fox-Hunting Painting, Ackermann
A fine and visually striking copy of The Noble Science: A Few General Ideas on Fox-Hunting, published in London in 1839 by Rudolph Ackermann.
Bound in rich dark green leather with an elegantly gilt-decorated spine, this tall octavo volume has been professionally restored preserving both its structural integrity and period character. The binding is complemented by marbled endpapers and edges.
The most exceptional feature of this copy is its hidden fore-edge painting, depicting a lively fox-hunting scene revealed when the pages are gently fanned. Unlike many examples where gilt obscures the artwork, this painting is concealed beneath marbling—an uncommon and highly desirable technique that enhances both rarity and visual impact.
Illustrated throughout with engraved hunting scenes and hounds, the work is dedicated to the Duke of Rutland and represents one of the classic 19th-century English sporting books. A handsome volume appealing equally to collectors of sporting literature, fine bindings, and fore-edge paintings.
Light foxing and toning present, most notably to some plates and prelims. Fore-edge painting remains clear and well-preserved.
Condition: Very Good +
Size: 6” x 9 ½”
This is a refined and uncommon example of an illustrated English sporting classic, elevated by its concealed fore-edge painting and elegant restoration.
