A lovely preserved 1856 third edition of Simon le Polletais: Esquisses de Mœurs Maritimes by H. de Chavannes de la Giraudière, published in Tours by Mame et Cie. This maritime novel, rich in seafaring atmosphere and moral narrative, is presented in a handsome 19th-century French prize binding, awarded by the Petit Séminaire d’Aubenas in 1860 for achievement in history.
The work vividly depicts the life and character of the Polletais, the fishing community of Dieppe, in a style blending realism with stirring patriotism. Illustrated throughout with fine steel engravings, including a frontispiece and multiple detailed maritime scenes.
Black polished cloth with ornate blind tooling and gilt floral wreath motif to front and back boards. Light marbled edges. Rubbing to edges/ corners. Prize label from Petit Séminaire d’Aubenas (dated 31 July 1860). Binding tight and sound. Some foxing and light toning. Small paper loss at upper corner of one leaf (no text loss). Moderate wear.
