A truly exceptional Victorian gift book, Nature; or, The Poetry of Earth and Sea by Madame Michelet, translated from the French by W. H. Davenport Adams and published by T. Nelson and Sons in London in 1880. A lyrical celebration of gardens, woods, mountains, rivers, lakes, and the sea, the work is illustrated throughout with two hundred exquisite designs by the celebrated French artist Hector Giacomelli.

This beautiful copy is in its original publisher’s full polished calf binding, finely finished with bright gilt double rules to both boards, intricate dentelle tooling, and a richly decorated spine with five raised bands and six compartments. The marbled page edges and richly patterned marbled endpapers make this a particularly handsome example of a Victorian presentation binding.

The binding and hinges are excellent and secure. Pages are remarkably bright and clean, with only very light, occasional foxing consistent with age. 431 pages.
