A very beautiful and well-preserved late Victorian edition of the Woks of George Herbert in Prose and Verse, published by Frederick Warne & Co. as part of the celebrated Lansdowne Poets series, issued circa 1880-1890.
With a mustard-yellow/gold cloth, the top board and spine are stamped with striking black and gilt detail. Beveled boards and gilt edges to all sides. Tight/sound binding. Binding tight/ sound. Gilt remains bright. Interior clean with mild age-toning and occasional light foxing, consistent with age. 488pp.
The volume includes Herbert’s devotional poetry—The Temple foremost among them—along with prose works, letters, and biographical material by Izaak Walton. Illustrated throughout with a frontispiece portrait and full-page engravings, the book also features decorative headpieces and distinctive red ruled borders framing the text, a hallmark of quality Victorian production.
