Published in London in 1891, this edition of The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne by Reverend Gilbert White remains one of the classic works of nature writing. First published in 1789, White’s observations of birds, mammals, insects, plants, weather, and the English countryside have inspired generations of naturalists and writers, including Charles Darwin and Henry David Thoreau.

This handsome copy is bound in full polished calf with elaborate gilt decoration to the spine, gilt-ruled covers, a black morocco spine label, richly marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges. The upper cover bears the gilt crest of Sir Roger Cholmeley’s School, Highgate, indicating it was awarded as a school prize in 1894. The volume retains its original prize presentation label.

Illustrated throughout with numerous engravings by the celebrated wood engraver Thomas Bewick and others, including birds, mammals, landscapes, and scenes from Selborne, this edition is equally appealing to collectors of natural history, fine bindings, and Victorian prize books.

Full polished calf binding remains sound and attractive with bright gilt decoration to the spine and covers. Leather retains a rich warm tone with light sun fading at top of board. Dentelle detail. Binding is tight and secure. Marbled endpapers and marbled page edges remain vibrant. Original 1894 prize presentation label from Sir Roger Cholmeley’s School is present.Interior pages are generally clean.  Numerous illustrations throughout remain crisp and well printed. 568 pages.
