Undine | 1909 First Rackham Edition (Trade) | Illustrated by Arthur Rackham | Rebound in a Fine Leather Binding | Rare
A finely bound 1909 edition of Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué — the First Edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham (Trade Issue). Published in London by William Heinemann and New York by Doubleday, Page & Co., this work remains one of the highlights of Rackham’s early 20th-century output.
This copy is handsomely rebound in full indigo blue leather with gilt lettering and raised bands to the spine, gilt border detail to boards, gilt page edges, and marbled endpapers. Original endpapers in addition. Color tipped-in frontispiece with fourteen additional fine colored tipped-in plates. SMall black and white illustrations throughout.
The Romantic tale of a water spirit who marries a knight to gain a soul is brought vividly to life through Rackham’s hauntingly beautiful color plates and decorations.
Notably, the spine reads “Ondine” — the French form of the name, which was often used interchangeably with “Undine” in European editions. Many binders and publishers adopted this spelling during the 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting the title’s wide circulation across languages.
