L’Artisan Pratique No. 151 (January 1922) – French Art Nouveau Decorative Arts Journal with Original Pattern Inserts
This original January 1922 issue of L’Artisan Pratique is a beautifully preserved example of one of France’s most important early 20th-century decorative arts journals. Issued as No. 151, this monthly revue was devoted to the applied arts, artisanal design, and interior decoration, serving as both inspiration and technical guide for craftsmen, designers, and decorators.
Notably, this issue retains its original large-format folded paper pattern inserts, a highly desirable and increasingly scarce feature. The inserts include striking Art Nouveau–influenced designs such as Fleurs Japonaises, Chardons Bleus, and decorative border motifs intended for furniture, music cabinets, metalwork, leather, and pyrography. Printed in distinctive blue and color inks, these patterns were meant for direct workshop use and are often missing or discarded in surviving copies.
Throughout the journal are finely printed black-and-white plates and diagrams illustrating repoussé metalwork, cloisonné enamel, furniture decoration, ornamental borders, and floral motifs, accompanied by detailed French-language instructions. The visual language reflects the transition from late Art Nouveau toward early Art Deco sensibilities.
Light, even age-toning throughout. Covers show gentle wear consistent with age. Interior pages clean and well-preserved. All original folded paper pattern inserts present, with expected folds from original publication; no losses observed.
Condition: Very good antique condition.
A piece for collectors of French design history, Art Nouveau graphics, decorative arts reference works, or those seeking authentic source material for period interiors and craft traditions.
