Dictionary of Musical Terms by Theo. Baker, Ph.D. (1895)

A late-19th-century reference work, this 21st edition of A Dictionary of Musical Terms was compiled and edited by Dr. Theo. Baker and published by G. Schirmer, Inc., New York, with copyright dated 1895.

Containing upwards of 9,000 English, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek musical terms, this volume was intended as a practical working dictionary for musicians, composers, and students. In addition to definitions, it includes pronunciation guides, rules for Italian, German, and French diction, and a supplement with an English–Italian vocabulary for composers.

The interior is illustrated with musical notation examples, classifications of instruments, acoustics diagrams, ornaments, cadences, and performance markings—making it both a scholarly reference and a visually engaging historical music book.

Bound in the publisher’s original red cloth with black lettering and decorative rules to the boards and spine. A period presentation inscription dated 1924 appears at the front, adding a subtle layer of provenance and personal history without detracting from usability.

Light edge and corner wear to the cloth, including small areas of fraying at the spine ends. Binding remains sound and secure. Pages are clean and legible with light, even age-toning. Period inscription present.
