The Poetical Works of Goldsmith, Smollett, Johnson, and Shenstone (1853) — Fine Binding, Full Leather, Gilt Gauffering, Illustrated
London: George Routledge and Co., 1853.
An exquisite Victorian fine binding, this mid-19th century volume presents the collected works of four distinguished poets in a richly executed full burgundy leather binding. Both boards are decorated in blind with intricate floral and geometric tooling, the spine with raised bands and gilt titling. The book retains its original luxury features: all edges gilt with gauffered patterning, striking multicolor marbled endpapers, and gilt-patterned doublures.
Inside, the volume is enhanced by engraved illustrations by John Gilbert, bringing to life many of the most beloved poems, including Goldsmith’s The Traveller and The Deserted Village. A superb example of a decorative Victorian literary binding, uniting craftsmanship, poetry, and illustration.
