A finely bound Albion Edition (1906) of Poetical Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson, published by Macmillan and Co., London. Beautifully presented in full dark maroon polished calf, gilt borders, and gilt emblem of Clough’s Correspondence College on the front board. The spine is richly gilt tooled with floral motifs and features a green leather title label. Inner gilt dentelles frame striking marbled endpapers, with all page edges gilt and a handsome engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. Gilt bright, binding tight with interior clean and crisp. 647 pages.
This copy carries significant provenance: it was awarded to Miss M. Newton by Clough’s Correspondence College in London for her success with distinction in 1908, with both the original award letter and certificate label preserved inside — a wonderful historical memento of Edwardian academic life.
Within its 647 pages are Tennyson’s great works, including Maud, The Princess, Enoch Arden, and his celebrated Idylls of the King, in which he immortalizes Arthurian legend, Merlin, and the quest for the Holy Grail. A superbly bound and well-preserved volume, both literary and collectible.
