Histoire de Fénelon, Archevêque de Cambrai by J.-J.-E. Roy | 1848

A beautifully bound mid-19th century French biography of François Fénelon, the esteemed Archbishop of Cambrai, authored by J.-J.-E. Roy and based on the work of Cardinal de Bausset. Published in Tours by Mame et Cie in 1848, this sixième édition (sixth edition) presents a richly illustrated and finely crafted volume in the grand tradition of French decorative bindings.

Bound in deep midnight cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped motifs on both boards — a bishop’s mitre, crozier, cross, and floral elements — framed by intricate blind-stamped borders. The spine is adorned with ornate gilt scrollwork and title. Illustrated with detailed engraved plates protected by tissue guards. Binding tight with some light rubbing to boards/gilt. Light foxing primarily to prelims an plates, as typical for this period. French text.

A fine example of French mid-19th century religious biography, this volume is as much an object of beauty as it is of historical value. Fénelon’s influence as a theologian, writer, and spiritual leader endures, and this edition’s craftsmanship reflects the care with which Mame et Cie produced works intended to inspire and endure.
