A handsome and increasingly scarce fine leather prize binding of The Out-Door World by W. Furneaux, published by Longmans, Green and Co., London, in 1900.

Bound in rich maroon full leather with gilt-ruled borders, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, decorative dentelle turn-ins, marbled endpapers, and marbled page edges. The front board bears the gilt crest of Christ’s Hospital, one of England’s most historic educational institutions, and the volume retains its original prize presentation leaf awarded in 1908.

Designed as a comprehensive introduction to natural history for young collectors, the work explores insects, butterflies, dragonflies, birds, reptiles, mammals, shells, fungi, wildflowers, ferns, forest trees, minerals, and fossils. Furneaux’s text is enhanced by 15 beautifully colored plates and hundreds of detailed black-and-white illustrations throughout the volume.
